Prior to the creation of the Franklin stove, most wood-burning stoves were very inefficient. They used up a lot of wood and did not provide much heat. The Franklin stove, created in 1741, with its unique system of heat ducts, produced twice the heat and used half the amount of wood as other stoves. The Franklin Stove, was one of Benjamin Franklin's inventions that was never patented. He wanted others to collaborate on improvements to his design as the need arose. Though it has been modified several times since its creation, the foundations upon which it was created are still essential elements today.
